It’s a little well-known fact in the beauty world that the FDA doesn’t have the strictest of regulations when it comes to monitoring beauty products. However, there are now two senators who are looking to change that.

Senators Dianne Feinstein and Susan Collins proposed the Personal Care Products Safety Act on Thursday. This bill would give the FDA more authority to regulate the production of beauty products. This seems especially necessary after news last week that Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $110.5 million in damages after a 65-year-old woman claimed to get ovarian cancer after using their baby powder.

“Americans use a variety of personal care products daily, and they should be able to know whether the products that they are applying to their hair or skin are safe,” said Senator Collins in a statement. “By updating FDA oversight of the ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products for the first time in nearly 80 years, our legislation will help increase safety for consumers, protect small businesses, and provide regulatory certainty for manufacturers.”

The bill would give the FDA the ability to do things like recall questionably safe beauty products, require ingredient information online as well as on labels and issue regulations on Good Manufacturing Practices. On top of many other important safety regulations.

One of the best parts is, many major beauty companies are completely on board including Revlon, Estée Lauder, Unilever, Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal.
