Martin Truex Jr. will miss Friday’s practice and qualfiying sessions at Michigan International Speedway to be with girlfriend Sherry Pollex, who will undergo surgery for ovarian cancer.
In a team release, Furniture Row Racing said: “Sherry and Martin would like to thank the #NASCAR community for all the well wishes.”
Truex Jr. and Pollex “have requested that everyone respect the family’s privacy as Sherry begins her treatment and recovery.”
Pollex, who has been with Truex Jr. for nine years, tweeted thanks to those who have reached out in support via social media.
Pollex has been tireless in her work for children with cancer. She and Truex Jr. co-founded the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation in 2007, and she co-hosts the annual “Catwalk for a Cause” charity event which features fashion, some from her own boutique – Lavendar.
“Everyone at Furniture Row Racing extends their thoughts and prayers to Sherry during her treatment and recovery period,” said FRR general manager Joe Garone in a statement. “She is a devoted supporter of our race team and we can’t wait for her return to the track.”
Matt Crafton will replace Truex in the No. 78 Chevrolet. Truex plans to be at the speedway Saturday and to race Sunday.
Truex, who last won at Sonoma Raceway in June 2013, is 26th in the points standings.
After Truex’s win in Sonoma, Sherry Pollex told USA TODAY Sports the driver, who snapped a 218-race winless streak, pulled into the winner’s circle and was visibly relieved. Pollex was elated too.
“He said, ‘Babe, I feel like I’m 50 pounds lighter,’ ” she said, hands shaking with excitement. “You see it all the time: Once a team gets that breakthrough win, it kind of opens the floodgates. I’m hoping that’s what happens with them.”
